Burnaby RCMP arrested 61 suspects and recovered nearly $15,000 worth of stolen goods during their latest anti-shoplifting operation at Metrotown mall.

The latest “Boost and Bust” initiative happened over four days and was executed with help from Burnaby RCMP’s Community Response Team (CRT), members of their Bike Unit, Police Mental Health Outreach Team, Metrotown Securit,y and Loss Prevention Officers.

12 of the 61 suspects arrested had outstanding warrants, including one individual arrested for shoplifting that was found to have an outstanding warrant for failing to comply with the Sex Offender Registry.

“In many cases, our officers arrested individuals known to police. In total, five prolific offenders were arrested, as well as 10 suspects with documented violent criminal histories,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj with the Burnaby RCMP.

Police say clothing was the most commonly stolen. One suspect tried to walk away with over $2,800 worth of clothing from a retailer, while another attempted to shoplift $840 worth of high-end outerwear.

“The Boost and Bust is an important initiative that not only helps curb shoplifting, but also supports businesses, retail workers and Loss Prevention Officers impacted by retail theft in our community,” added Cpl. Michael Kalanj.
