No April Fools’ Day joke: Gas prices set to jump due to carbon tax increase

In News by Anywhere Vancouver

This is no April Fools’ Day joke. Gas prices across BC and much of Canada are set to jump up on April 1st as another carbon tax increase kicks in officially.

The carbon tax is increasing by over three cents a litre  across the province.

According to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, drivers in Vancouver will be paying a total of about 81 cents per litre of gasoline in taxes, while drivers in Victoria will be paying 74 cents per litre. Motorists across the rest of the province will be paying around 67 cents per litre in taxes.

As of Saturday, March 30, gas prices in Vancouver are hovering near 202.9 cents a litre.

The majority of British Columbians support Premier David Eby asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to cancel the scheduled tax hike.

“Seven out of 10 premiers have already told Trudeau not to hike the tax and a huge majority of British Columbians want our premier to join the fight,” said Carson Binda, B.C. Director for the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “British Columbians deserve a premier who will fight for us, not a yes-man for Trudeau.”

BC has its own program separate from the federal program, which was first implemented in 2008. The federal carbon tax is increasing from $65 to $80 per tonne on April 1st.
