Are you planning to travel to the United States? If so, Canadians are being asked to prepare for “scrutiny at ports of entry”.
On Friday, the federal government updated its travel advisory for the United States, and said that in some situations, Canadians could be detained.
“Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders and the Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet entry or exit requirements for the United States,” reads their advisory.
The new warning also states that your electronic devices could be searched.
“Expect scrutiny at ports of entry, including of electronic devices. Comply and be forthcoming in all interactions with border authorities.”
The government’s advisory also states what may happen to Canadians who are denied entry into the United States.
“If you are denied entry, you could be detained while awaiting deportation.”
Canadians and other foreign nationals who plan to visit for more than 30 days also have new guidelines they must follow to avoid punishment.
Canadians and other foreign nationals visiting the United States for periods longer than 30 days must be registered with the United States Government. Failure to comply with the registration requirement could result in penalties, fines, and misdemeanour prosecution.
At border crossings throughout the country, fewer and fewer Canadians are travelling to the United States as an ongoing trade war has soured the once-healthy relationship between the two North American nations.
