As International Women’s Day approaches this weekend on March 8th, we’re conducting a special interview series featuring inspiring female leaders and innovators here in Vancouver.
Each of these inspiring women are shaping industries, breaking barriers, and redefining success in their own unique way.
Our final interview in this series is with Karen Gray, Vice President of Marketing, Communication and Stakeholder Engagement at Parq Casino.
Parq Casino emphasizes its commitment to the local community. Can you share specific initiatives you’ve led to promote diversity and inclusion within the organization?
“At Parq Casino, I lead the ‘For Vancouver’ initiative, which prioritizes our Vancouver-first philosophy. This approach focuses on employing local residents, purchasing from local companies, nurturing relationships with neighbourhood non-profits, and donating hundreds of thousands of dollars and in-kind support to local community partners.”
“A significant part of this initiative is our commitment to hiring locally and working with individuals from diverse backgrounds and those facing barriers to traditional employment. Parq actively engages and consults with social development agencies such as YWCA, CAN WiN, Open Door Group, Mosaic, Jobs West and ISSofBC to hire and support individuals with diverse backgrounds.”
“Within our organization, we have a saying: ‘Everyone’s a big deal at Parq Casino.’ Our staff embodies this sentiment, treating each other with openness, courtesy, and respect, regardless of who we are, where we come from, or what our roles are.”
As a female leader in a prominent position, how do you mentor and support other women aspiring to advance in their careers?
“I make myself accessible and treat people with respect, dignity, and empathy, ensuring they feel seen and heard. I share tips and coaching where appropriate, implement mechanisms for feedback, and strive to be a good role model by operating with a clear set of values and achieving success in my role. Additionally, I ensure that individuals feel seen and heard in corporate environments and extend the same support to men who advocate for women.”
What is your favourite part about your job?
“I love working in this super fun industry. We have built Parq Casino into a place where people come to have fun, enjoy a variety of food and entertainment options, and experience Vancouver’s best gambling destination. It’s incredibly fun and rewarding. My role is widely varied, encompassing marketing, VIP relations, community engagement, responsible gambling, and serving as an executive of the BC Gambling Industry Association. No day is the same for me, and I have a great team around me.”
Who are the women that have inspired you, and why?
“The first person who comes to mind is my Mum. She was an ’80s Super Mum, juggling a full-time job, raising three kids, managing a home, and doing it all with a smile on her face and love and warmth for her family. From her, I learned a lot about love, tenacity, and grit. She raised me to go out there, give it my best, be kind and empathetic, and ‘just keep swimming’.”
“More recently, I’m inspired by my two adult daughters and their determination to balance the lifestyle they want with a fulfilling and important career.”
“In my work life, I’ve been fortunate to be touched by many incredible people. I’ve worked with a lot of great leaders and teams, both women and supportive men.”
How do you hope to inspire the next generation of women in your industry?
“By being seen.”
“By being myself.”
“By going out there and continuing to do what I think is right, being successful, being happy, being strong and courageous.”
“By showing that it can be done.”
