City councillor introducing motion to install permanent “Vancouver” sign

A Vancouver City Councillor is introducing a motion to install a permanent “Vancouver” sign. The current “Vancouver” sign by Canada Place was only meant to be a temporary installation as it wasn’t “manufactured to withstand the elements”.

City Councillor Peter Meiszner took to social media Tuesday to announce he’s putting forward a motion to bring a permanent “Vancouver” sign to our city.

“You may have seen the temporary one down by Canada Place—which has been a huge hit with locals and tourists alike,” said Meiszner on X.

“My motion will bring a new, permanent Vancouver sign to our city, manufactured to withstand the elements, and designed with our local communities in mind.”

The ABC City Councillor also mentioned that the permeant sign he’s proposing may not be located in the exact same spot.

The temporary sign was installed by Destination Vancouver and the Hotel Development Association, which has been a huge hit with locals and tourists alike.

Some want the sign to stay in place, but unfortunately that’s not feasible.

“Unfortunately it’s not designed for all-weather/permanence,” said Meiszner.

“My suggestions: Try to make it narrower font. It’s hard for people to fit the whole thing in a photo. So when it’s busy it takes awhile for people to get a shot,” added another user.

Meiszner also alluded to the fact that Vancouver is set to host a number of massive events, such as the FIFA World Cup, and having a permanent sign makes sense.

“There’s so much coming up in our city. We’ve got FIFA coming in 2026, we’ve got the Grey Cup, we’ve got the Invictus Games, we’ve got the Juno Awards, and I just think it’s time that we get our own permanent ‘Vancouver’ sign to share our love and pride for our beautiful city, not just with locals but with visitors around the world,” said the City Councillor in his video message.
