A raging wildfire in the province’s Fraser Valley and Thompson–Nicola Regional District has forced the closure of a section of the Coquihalla Highway.

As of Thursday afternoon, Highway 5 (Coquihalla Highway), remains closed between Merritt and Hope due to the Mine Creek wildfire.

The wildfire is currently 1,900 hectares in size and is considered “out of control”. One evacuation order and two evacuation alerts remain in place at this time.

The evacuation alert covers:

  • The community of Brookmere;
  • All properties on Murray Lake and Maka-Murray FSR
  • All properties along the Coquihalla Highway south of the Larson Hill exit (Exit 250) to the southern TNRD border at the Britton Creek Rest Area
  • All areas as outlined on this map

“This Evacuation Alert is in place to prepare you to evacuate your premises or property should it be found necessary,” said the Thompson-Nicola Regional District. “Residents will be given as much advance notice as possible prior to an Evacuation Order; however, you may receive limited notice due to changing conditions.”

Drivers are being asked to use Highway 1 and Highway 3 as alternative routes.
