The Big Picnic 2024
Spring is a beautiful time to explore Vancouver as cherry blossoms cover the city with their white and pink beauty. To celebrate, the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival holds a cherry blossom-themed picnic each year.
The Big Picnic is being held at David Lam Park, which celebrates Japan’s original gift of cherry trees to the city of Vancouver and the Honorable David Lam’s gift of one hundred Akebono cherry trees to his park as a symbol of friendship.
The Big Picnic follows the Japanese traditional custom of hanami, which translates to “flower viewing”. Hanami dates back to more than a thousand years ago when Japanese aristocrats sat under the flowering cherry trees and wrote poems inspired by the blossoms.
