A GoFundMe page has been set up to help the family of a man who was fatally stabbed in White Rock earlier this week.

Kulwinder Singh Sohi was stabbed to death in the 15400-block of Marine Drive around 9:30pm Tuesday night. Despite lifesaving measures from first responders, he died at the scene.

The GoFundMe page was set up by Gurleen, Kulwinder’s brother. Gurleen describes Kulwinder as a “hard working and really passionate person”. The 26-year-old moved to Canada in 2019 and worked as plumber.

“I’m really shocked and depressed after this tragic loss,” reads the online fundraiser.

“Our parents are still in India and we want to give peace to Kulwinder soul by performing last rituals at our hometown.”

As of Thursday morning, the campaign has already raised over $45,000, surpassing its goal of raising $40,000.

“Above all, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the young victim impacted by the tragic events of last night. Like many, I was profoundly saddened to learn of this distressing incident,” said White Rock Mayor Megan Knight in a release Wednesday afternoon.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5’11”, wearing a hat and a grey hoodie with the hood up over the hat. He was last seeing fleeing Northbound from the promenade towards Marine Drive.

Two stabbings in less than a week

Over the weekend, another stabbing occurred near the White Rock Pier. On Sunday, a 28-year-old victim was transported to hospital after they were stabbed near the White Rock Pier. The 28-year-old was transported to hospital by Emergency Health Services with non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect in Sunday’s attack is described as a black male, wearing a ball cap and a grey hoodie. While the suspect description provided by police in both incidents are similar, the RCMP cannot confirm that the two stabbings are related.

Both violent attacks have raised concerns in the community and police are increasing patrols near the waterfront area.

“Effective immediately, we are doubling our efforts with additional officers deployed, in addition to our regular shifts, to ensure public safety and instill confidence in our community,’ said the Mayor.

RCMP Staff Sergeant Rob Dixon added that “this level of violence is not something we are accustomed to seeing in White Rock”. He mentions that “experienced investigators” are working hard to find the suspect.

“Understandably, the incidents have raised concerns surrounding safety in our community. I share those concerns. These acts of violence are the top priority for me and the detachment,” said Dixon.
