GoFundMe set up as search continues for owner of dog that killed small maltipoo at Second Beach

The search for the owner of an aggressive off-leash dog that killed a small family dog last week at Vancouver’s Second Beach continues.

Andrea Jagdeo and her husband were walking at Second Beach around 5:30pm on Monday, August 5th with their three children when they stopped by the washrooms to give their two dogs, including Sky, a three-year-old Maltipoo, some water. As they were trying to figure out what to do next, a large dog came out of nowhere and grabbed Sky by her stomach.

Andrea’s husband, A.J., wasn’t aware of what was happening immediately, and when he finally realized that Sky was being attacked, he quickly tried to pry the dog’s mouth open with his hands. Andrea’s youngest said someone kicked the attacking dog towards its back leg, who then finally let go of Sky.

With the family’s focus solely on Sky, the dog owner leashed her dog after letting go of Sky, who then proceeded to run from the scene.

In an effort to locate the owner, Andrea Jagdeo and AJ Tay have set up a Facebook page to allow the community to send in tips and any sightings.

“She made a choice to take the leash off of her dog, and with choices there are consequences. She needs to own up to what she did. It wouldn’t have been as horrible if she had stayed, but she fled, which is unacceptable absolutely,” said Andrea.

Dog owner involved in attack

On Tuesday evening, AJ posted on the Justice for Sky Facebook page that a GoFundMe page has been set up to further help with the search. Funds raised will help provide a reward for information leading to the arrest of the owner and the dog.

Funds will also help the family cover

  • Legal fees associated with bringing a suit against the owner and dog
  • Ongoing legal fees to bring a class action suit to change city and provincial bylaws
  • Vigil and memorial for Sky as well as past victims that never had their voices heard
  • Ongoing medical bills for therapy the family needs

“The family consisting of 3 young children witnessed the whole brutal attack ending with Sky laying lifeless after the larger dog finally released her. No one should ever have to experience trauma like this, let alone children,” reads the GoFundMe page.

“She also leaves behind her brother Zuma. Zuma has spent the past few days sitting around staring at her Sky Towers (Sky’s play pen) wondering when shes coming back.”

The campaign looks to raise $10,000.
