A suspect is in custody after a high-speed chase through Surrey and Langley ended with a semi-truck being driven into the Fraser River.
The “dangerous series of events” started around 7:30pm on May 14th when officers from the Langley Special Response Team spotted a semi-truck in the area of 24 Ave and 206 Street bearing mis-matched license plates.
Just after midnight, officers attempted to stop the vehicle with the help of Integrated Police Dog Services. As police turned on their lights, the 40-year-old driver “immediately began ramming police vehicles”.
“Despite police attempts to disengage, the suspect continued his aggressive actions by pursuing and intentionally ramming police vehicles before fleeing,” said Langley RCMP in a release.
“A tire deflation device was deployed by SRT which successfully deflated the semi-truck’s front right tire, but the vehicle continued to flee at high speed.”
Posing a “significant risk to public and police safety,” frontline officers from the Langley RCMP pursued the stolen vehicle into Surrey, through multiple residential neighbourhoods. Despite a second spike belt disabling the vehicle’s rear tires, the suspect continued to drive dangerously at high speeds, disregard red lights, and overtake multiple vehicles.
The pursuit ended in the Bridgeview area of Surrey, where the semi-truck was driven into a public dock area occupied by several dozen people. After the semi-truck became submerged in the Fraser River, the suspect got out of the vehicle and continued to flee on foot before being arrested a short distance away.

“This was an incredibly dangerous situation involving a suspect who showed zero regard for public safety or the lives of our officers,” said Sergeant Zynal Sharoom, Media Relations Officer for Langley RCMP.
“Thanks to the skill, coordination, and professionalism of multiple policing units, this individual was safely taken into custody without injury to the public or police.”
The suspect remains in police custody as the investigation contines.
