As International Women’s Day approaches this weekend on March 8th, we’re kicking off a special interview series featuring inspiring female leaders and innovators here in Vancouver.
Each of these inspiring women are shaping industries, breaking barriers, and redefining success in their own unique way.
Farida Sayani is the co-founder of Executive Hotels and Resorts, a marquee name in Vancouver’s hospitality industry dating back to 1986. In 2023, Farida opened the AZUR Legacy Collection Hotel in downtown Vancouver with her daughter, Sofia.
What inspired you to get into the hotel and hospitality industry?
“My journey started with art. I’ve always had a deep appreciation for design, space, and the way an environment can shape an experience. Traveling the world, I stayed in some of the finest hotels and was captivated by how seamlessly they balanced service, comfort, and aesthetics. I knew then that I wanted to create something of my own- something deeply personal, yet truly exceptional.”
“When the opportunity arose to build my first hotel in Richmond Downtown, I saw the chance to bring a boutique, all-suite concept to Vancouver- one that prioritized space, comfort, and an elevated guest experience. But what made it truly special was the ability to infuse it with my own vision. From the décor to the smallest details, and even incorporating my own artwork into the guest rooms and lobby, every element was a reflection of my passion.”
“For me, hospitality isn’t just about providing a place to stay- it’s about creating a place where people feel inspired, cared for, and at home. That has always been my goal, and it continues to drive me every day.”
Can you describe your inspiration behind opening AZUR Hotel and how special it is to do it with your family?
“Downtown Vancouver was my inspiration for AZUR. With its central location near the waterfront, cruise ship terminals, and the financial and fashion districts, this site was the perfect setting for a boutique hotel. After 40 years in the industry, I understood what people were looking for- a hotel that felt intimate yet refined, with personalized service that larger properties often cannot provide. Vancouver needed this, and I knew AZUR could fill that space.”
“But what makes this journey truly special is seeing my daughter and granddaughters step into leadership roles, confidently guiding the hotel’s future. Empowering them to take AZUR forward is one of my greatest joys.”

Who are the women that have inspired you, and why?
“I started my journey in hospitality in the 1960s, when the industry was largely male-dominated. At that time, my inspiration was Eleni Skalbania, the founder of the Wedgewood Hotel, who built and made a boutique hotel successful from scratch. Her journey reinforced my belief that boutique hotels should offer more than just accommodation- they should create an experience, a sense of belonging. That philosophy continues to guide me today as I shape and refine the guest experience at AZUR.”
What does a typical day at work look like for you?
“No two days in hospitality are ever the same. This industry is fast-paced, demanding, and full of unexpected challenges- but that’s what makes it exciting. I thrive in this dynamic environment, solving problems as they arise and ensuring that every guest experience is seamless.”
“I often compare running a hotel to playing the piano. Every department is like a key, each one must be in tune and work in harmony to create the perfect melody. If one is off, the entire experience changes. My role is to make sure all the parts work together flawlessly, from operations to guest services to the smallest details that shape a stay.”

“I spend my day working closely with my department heads, making sure everything runs smoothly while also connecting with our staff. I believe in empowering them to lead with confidence. Guest experience remains my top priority, so I personally review feedback, always looking for ways to refine and enhance what we offer. The pursuit of excellence is ongoing, and that’s what drives me every day.”
How do you hope to inspire the next generation of women in your industry?
“I believe in giving women real opportunities to grow and lead. In hospitality, women are the backbone of the industry, and I make sure they have the power to make their own decisions and run their departments with confidence. I actively encourage women to step into leadership roles, prosper, and take on higher management positions. When you trust people and give them the space to lead, they thrive – and that’s how real change happens.”
