One man is dead after running from a police traffic stop in Surrey last week.
Just after 11pm on July 30th, the Surrey Police Service officers conducted a traffic stop of a westbound vehicle in the 15600 block 56 Avenue, which is also known as Highway 10.
The driver of the vehicle ran from the traffic stop on foot and was struck by a vehicle travelling eastbound.
“Despite emergency medical attention from SPS officers, Surrey Fire Service firefighters, and BCEHS paramedics, the driver, an adult male, tragically passed away at the scene of the collision,” said the department in a release.

The department has notified the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of the incident.
At the beginning of each investigation, the IIO considers two key factors: whether there has been a death or an injury that meets the threshold of serious harm as defined by the Police Act, and whether there is a connection between the death or serious harm and an officer’s actions or inaction.
The highway was closed overnight as investigators from both the IIO and SPS’s Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) collected evidence.
No further details will be released at this time.
