With snow set to approach the Metro Vancouver region, the province is warning drivers to be prepared for a messy commute Monday morning.
The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure released a statement Sunday evening stating that “wintery conditions could create challenging driving conditions for the Monday morning commute”.
Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Sunday morning, stating that a “series of storms will bring winter weather conditions along the BC coast from Monday through Tuesday”.
Snow is expected to fall beginning after midnight tonight and is expected to change to rain by Monday afternoon.
To prepare for the incoming snow, the eastbound HOV lane on the Port Mann Bridge will be closed for winter operations from midnight to 2pm.
“Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure and its maintenance contractors will monitor conditions to determine if the westbound HOV closure is needed,” added the ministry.
The ministry will also monitor conditions on the Alex Fraser Bridge.
“The ministry will further be monitoring conditions on the Alex Fraser Bridge and may close lanes as conditions warrant. Crews will be out in full force to plow, sand and salt roads as needed, with heavy wrecker tow trucks also ready as needed,” says the ministry.
Drivers are reminded to use caution and “avoid travel in poor weather conditions”. Those commuting on Monday should prepare for delays and longer commutes and “ensure their vehicles are properly equipped with winter tires”.
