It’s probably a good idea to stay indoors this weekend.

On Thursday afternoon, Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for:

  • Metro Vancouver – central including the City of Vancouver Burnaby and New Westminster
  • Metro Vancouver – North Shore including West Vancouver and North Vancouver
  • Metro Vancouver – northeast including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge
  • Metro Vancouver – southeast including Surrey and Langley
  • Metro Vancouver – southwest including Richmond and Delta

The weather agency says that heavy snow is expected Saturday night and some areas could see up to 30 cm of snow.

“A significant weather system will push across the South Coast this weekend bringing widespread snow to the region,” says Environment Canada.

“Periods of light snow will start on Saturday and intensify to heavy snow Saturday night. Heavy snow is expected to ease Sunday morning for most regions.”

At the moment, Environment Canada’s forecast suggests total snow accumulations of 10 to 20 cm with nearly 30 cm possible over upslope regions and higher terrain.

If you are planning to drive this weekend, please slow down and stay safe.
