On Friday evening, the family of a Surrey teen who went missing over a month ago received devastating news.

In a Facebook post, the family of Joseph Maku said the 18-year-old teen, who was reported missing on October 22, has been found dead in Delta.

Brenda Maku, Joseph’s sister, says their family learned that he has been dead since the day he was reported missing.

“The cause of death is still under investigation by the BC Coroners Service, the investigation is still ongoing, and it will be long before we know how my brother passed away,” reads the post. “Until then, we will remain shocked that my brother is no longer here to shine a light on us all.”

On November 9th, a search party was held at Holland Park for the missing teen. He was last seen on Tuesday, October 22nd in the 9600 block of 130 Street in Surrey.

“With this, I also want to say thank you to everyone that took the time to search, and help us look for Joseph,” continues the post. “Countless days and nights were spent in the cold, in the rain, in different cities and parks trying to find him, and so many people have continued to let me know how loved and cared for Joseph was.”
