It was announced earlier this month that the City of Vancouver has approved a new rental building for Vancouver’s West End neighbourhood.
Located at 1150 Barclay Street, the project is led by Vancouver-based real estate company PC Urban. The aging 1940s-era condo building will be replaced with a new development focused on better supporting the West End’s senior community.
“This project is about delivering much-needed affordable rental housing and providing genuine, tangible support to the West End community, especially its seniors,” says Steve Forrest, COO of PC Urban.
“We are replacing a nearly 80-year-old building that lacks basic safety and accessibility features with a new community that offers secure, modern homes and a critical ground-floor space dedicated entirely to seniors’ food security and well-being.”

The 20-storey rental building will officer 20% of its units (30 units) as below-market rental (BMR) units. Of these, 30% will be deeply discounted and reserved specifically for seniors.
To further support seniors, the building will feature a ground-floor indoor/outdoor amenity room totalling over 1,550 square feet (900+ square feet indoors, 650+ square feet outdoors). This space will be given to the West End Seniors Network (WESN) at no cost for their use.
“The need for suitable, affordable housing and food security for seniors in the West End has increased dramatically,” says Claudine Matlo, Executive Director, WESN. “A fully equipped ground-floor community space, as well as a financial contribution, will significantly boost our ability to provide food and supportive programs, directly benefiting the most vulnerable members of our community.”
The amenity room will also come equipped with a full commercial kitchen to support WESN’s vital food security programs and PC Urban is providing $175,000 in direct financial support to WESN for food operations and programming.
