Police officer nearly struck by speeding car going 145 km/h in a 80 km/h zone in Richmond

Police are seeking dash cam footage after a speeding vehicle nearly struck a Richmond RCMP officer earlier this month.

An officer with the Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit (RSU) was conducting speed enforcement with a laser gun on Highway 91 near Knight Street Bridge when he observed a vehicle going 145 km/h in a 80 km/h zone.

The officer, who was on foot, attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver didn’t stop, resulting in the officer having to “dive to the side of the road” to avoid being struck.

“Fortunately, our officer was not seriously injured but this type of driving behaviour puts all road users at risk,” says Sergeant Eric Baskette, Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit.

“We are asking anyone who was in the area of Highway 91 by Knight Street between 8:40 a.m. and 9:10 a.m. to review their dash cam footage for this incident.”

Police are now looking for dash cam footage of a Black sedan with a broken passenger side mirror. The vehicle was last seen travelling Eastbound on Highway 91.

Anyone with information or dash cam footage is asked to call Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 2024-15548.
