The driver of a semi-truck that plunged off a bridge along Highway 1 in BC Saturday morning has yet to be located.

Police responded to a report of a single tractor trailer collision around 6:45am Saturday morning.

“Initial investigation suggests the semi-trailer, which was traveling east, had driven off the Burhn Bridge, and down sixty feet into the river,” said Cpl. James Grandy.

“The driver, who is believed to the only occupant, has not yet been located.”

Footage from the scene shows a section of the bridge railing completely destroyed.

Police say no other vehicles were involved in the accident. Royal Marine, Search and Rescue, BC Emergency Health Services, and the Fire Department remain on scene.

Due to the “significant damage caused to the bridge deck,” Highway 1 remains closed in both directions.

Traffic for the time being is being rerouted from Highway 97A to the junction at 97B.
