A costly and devastating trade war between Canada and the United States has been avoided for the time being after some last-minute negotiating.

After a phone call between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Monday afternoon, tariffs on Canada have been delayed for 30 days. The two of them spoke twice, the first phone call happening Monday morning, before coming to an agreement.

The U.S. President had ordered a 25% tariff on Canadian imports, with energy facing a 10% tariff instead. In response, Canada was prepared to slap 25% tariffs on $30 billion worth of imported U.S. products before increasing that to $155 billion in 21 days.

“I just had a good call with President Trump,” said Trudeau on X. “Canada is implementing our $1.3 billion border plan — reinforcing the border with new choppers, technology and personnel, enhanced coordination with our American partners, and increased resources to stop the flow of fentanyl. Nearly 10,000 frontline personnel are and will be working on protecting the border.”

Trudeau also said Canada is appointing a new “Fentanyl Czar”.

“In addition, Canada is making new commitments to appoint a Fentanyl Czar, we will list cartels as terrorists, ensure 24/7 eyes on the border, launch a Canada- U.S. Joint Strike Force to combat organized crime, fentanyl and money laundering.”
