Terrorist charges laid after man’s throat slashed onboard Surrey bus

The suspect involved in a stranger attack that occurred on a Surrey bus over the weekend is now facing new terrorism charges.

On Saturday, April 1st, just after 9:30 a.m., an altercation occurred between two male passengers on board a bus travelling on Fraser Highway and 156th Street in Surrey.

“During the altercation, one of the males allegedly took out a knife and slashed the other male across the throat,” says Cst Amanda Steed with the Metro Vancouver Transit Police.

The victim was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Abdul Aziz Kawam has been charged with attempted murder, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and assault with a weapon. According to BC’s electronic court registry, Kawam also faces four terrorism charges.

The investigation has now been taken over by the RCMP.

“During the course of our investigation, it was determined that the suspect made several concerning comments, which is why the RCMP Integrated National Security Enforcement Team was notified,” says Cst Amanda Steed with the Metro Vancouver Transit Police.

“Transit Police will be working collaboratively with INSET as the investigation continues.”
