Two people are wounded and a suspect is dead following a violent stabbing in downtown Vancouver near Library Square Wednesday morning.

Staff from a restaurant near Robson and Hamilton Streets called police shortly after 11:30am this morning about a man who had stolen alcohol. The staff said the suspect was “armed with a knife inside the restaurant”.

Responding officers rushed to the scene, and located the armed suspect inside a nearby 7-Eleven convenience store. During the interaction with police, the suspect was shot and taken into custody.

“VPD officers and other first responders administered first aid to the suspect, who was taken to hospital and later died,” said the VPD in a release.

Two people were injured, and both were transported to hospital.

“Their injuries are not believed to be life threatening.”

The VPD say the Independent Investigations Office is now investigating the fatal incident.
