“Unstable crane” shuts down roads and SkyTrain station in Vancouver

An “unstable crane” closed several roads and a SkyTrain station in Vancouver Thursday.

Shortly before 12:30pm, Vancouver Police said traffic is closed in both directions between Clark and Glen Drives and on Keith Drive between E. 6th and 7th Avenues to allow crews to “deal with a construction crane issue”.

“We are on scene assisting with traffic control in the area,” said Cst. Tania Visintin in an email to Anywhere Vancouver. “The site has been evacuated and traffic is blocked on East 6th Avenue between Clark and Glen Drive.”

TransLink first posted at 11am saying that Millennium Line service between Commercial-Broadway Station and VCC-Clark Station had been suspended.

While normal service resumed just after 1:30pm, Translink said again shortly after 2pm that service between the two stations has been suspended again due to the crane issue.

A post on X shows the construction site in question and traffic delays in the area.

Cst. Visintin adds that no injuries have been reported and that “it is likely the load will fall safely to the street,” but at this time, that isn’t definitive.

“The crane and load are secure. There is no risk to the public and there were no injuries,” said WorkSafeBC in an email to Anywhere Vancouver.

Shortly before midnight, regular Millennium Line service between Commercial-Broadway Station and VCC-Clark Station was restored.
