The Vancouver Canucks start training camp on Thursday, and when the team hits the ice in Penticton, one familiar face will not be present.

The 28-year-old forward revealed today that he was diagnosed with testicular cancer over the summer. Joshua said in a statement that doctors were able to successfully remove the tumor.

“This summer, I  felt a lump on one of my testicles that doctors would later diagnose as testicular cancer,” said Dakota Joshua in a statement released by the Canucks today. “The news was obviously scary to hear, but thankfully, doctors were able to successfully remove the tumor. The last several weeks have been extremely challenging and I’ve been fortunate to have the support of my family, friends, teammates and doctors.”

Joshua adds that he “will not be ready for the start of training camp” as he continues to “heal from surgery”.

“I plan on returning to play as soon as possible this season and I am working hard every day to re-join my teammates.”

In June, the team re-signed Dakota Joshua to a four-year extension valued at $13 million. The deal, which carries an average annual value (AAV) of $3.25 million, ensures Joshua will remain in Canucks colours through the end of the 2027-28 season.

The 6’3”, 206 lbs. forward had a breakout season, netting 18 goals and a total of 32 points over 63 games. He continued his impressive performance in the playoffs, contributing eight points, ranking him fourth among Canucks forwards.
