Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim has issued a statement following a string of incidents that has left the community shaken.

Officers responded to a call at 1:30pm Monday afternoon after a woman’s body was discovered on the shoreline near the Kitsilano Yacht Club. Another woman was found deceased in the water at Vancouver’s Sunset Beach around 10am Sunday morning.

Later on Monday evening, a triple stabbing unfolded in downtown Vancouver in less than 15 minutes. Officers were called to Granville Street near Nelson Street at 9:40pm after a 33-year-old man had been stabbed in the back. Just minutes later, police received another call that said a 41-year-old man had been stabbed near Granville and Davie Street.

As officers responded to the second incident, a 32-year-old man was stabbed near Nelson and Granville Street around 9:52pm.

“The safety and well-being of every Vancouverite is not just a priority – it’s our commitment. Vancouver is a city where everyone deserves to feel safe, whether they live, work, or play here,” said Mayor Ken Sim in a statement.

“The recent tragic events – especially the heartbreaking discovery of two deceased individuals in English Bay and the violent stabbings that occurred last night – are deeply unsettling. Though these incidents are unrelated, they have shaken our community. My heartfelt thoughts are with the victims and their families during this extremely challenging time.”

Police have now identified the two women found deceased on two separate beaches around Vancouver’s English Bay.

“We now know the names of these women and we have informed their families of their tragic deaths,” says Sgt. Steve Addison. “While we continue to investigate both cases, we are confident these deaths are not connected.”

The cause of death of the woman found at Sunset Beach remains unknown, and police are not releasing her name at this time.

Investigators also confirmed the identity of the woman found near Kits Beach on Monday.

“Out of respect for her, her family, friends, and loved ones, police will not be sharing additional information about her identity or how she died, however criminality is not suspected,” said police in a statement.
