Vancouver Police have arrested a man following a violent robbery near Granville Island Tuesday.

Just before 10:30am, police received 911 calls of a “man with bear spray and a samurai sword” at a business near West 3rd Avenue and Fir Street.

The suspect fled the scene, but officers were able to locate him on the seawall near Granville Island. As police attempted to arrest the suspect, he threatened to jump into the False Creek waters.

“Officers from VPD’s Emergency Response and Crisis Negotiator teams were called to the scene and the man was taken into custody after approximately 90 minutes,” said police.

Officers deployed an ARWEN gun during the arrest.
