“Only undertake essential travel”: Vancouver residents warned about incoming snowstorm

City officials are warning Vancouver residents to be prepared before more snow hits the region.

On Tuesday morning, Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for Metro Vancouver.

The weather agency says that anywhere from 10 to 20 cm of snow is in store for different parts of the region.

“A Pacific low pressure system is expected to bring widespread snow to the south coast tonight into Wednesday. Snow may become mixed with rain over Greater Victoria on Wednesday afternoon before easing late in the afternoon or early evening,” says Environment Canada.

After seeing how much chaos was caused by last week’s snowstorm and icy conditions, residents are being warned to stay off the roads if they can.

“The best way to stay safe during snow is to only undertake essential travel,” said the City of Vancouver in a statement.

“Keeping roads clear allows City crews to do their work. If you must drive make sure you have winter tires, allow more time for travel and stick to priority routes.”

Crew are out “pre-treating” priority routes, which include major roads, bus routes, bridges within City limits, and main streets adjacent to major hospitals.

Four major pedestrian pathways and 16 of the most-used bike routes will also be treated by crews.

Residents are also being reminded to clear their sidewalks within a 24-hour period or face a fine of up to $750.

The snow also creates challenges for seniors and people with mobility challenges.

“Help others in need. Snow and ice on the sidewalk can be a barrier for many people, particularly seniors and people with mobility challenges,” added the City.
