Police are once again reminding residents to be vigilant following a spike in distraction thefts in Vancouver.
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) says that in November alone, there were 20 reported incidents in Vancouver, with 16 occurring in East Vancouver.
This marks a 122% increase compared to November 2024.
“These thieves may appear friendly, but in reality, they are persuasive, deceitful, and prey on our elderly and vulnerable population,” says Cst. Darren Wong.
“For those of us who have elderly loved ones and neighbours, who may be at risk for distraction theft, we can do our part to protect them by reaching out and discussing prevention tactics.”
Police recommend keeping your valuables concealed under your clothing, avoid letting strangers into your personal space, and if you feel you’re being targeted by a thief, make noise to draw attention.

Distraction thefts involve thieves using sleight of hand techniques to steal their valuables, and often times target seniors. The thief will overwhelm the victim by invading their personal space, place the fake jewelry on them, and simultaneously removing the victim’s valuables without them knowing.
“These thieves work quick by distracting their victims, then leave as quickly as they arrived,” adds Cst. Wong. “Often, victims don’t even realize they’ve been scammed until much later, when they notice their valuables are missing. By that time, the thieves have moved on to another victim.”
19 out of the 20 incidents in November “happened in close proximity to a victim’s residence”.
The VPD urges residents to report distraction thefts immediately to police.
