Over the weekend, a man fled from police in Washington State and crossed into Canada before a fiery car crash in Surrey.
A 21-year-old man from from Irvine, California was driving the stolen Hyundai and fled from a traffic stop on I5.
“On July 22, 2023 at approximately 7:45PM Whatcom Troopers were advised of an attempt to contact out of Skagit County for a stolen Hyundai out of Seattle. A 911 caller described the vehicle as being near collisions and having lane travel being a potential DUI,” tweeted out Trooper Kelsey Harding.

“Troopers located the Hyundai Tucson, observed and it and attempted to stop it near north on I 5 near Slater Road when the Hyundai fled from the traffic stop.”
The suspect reached speeds of up to 185 km/h and crossed the border into Canada through the Nexus lane at the Peace Arch Crossing.
After crossing into Canada, the driver of the stolen Hyundai collided with another vehicle on Highway 99.
“Officers located the silver Hyundai SUV on Highway 99 north of 16th Avenue, where it went off the road and caught fire. The lone driver managed to extricate himself from the vehicle, said Surrey RCMP.
The man was taken into custody after having a brief altercation with police. Surrey RCMP say officers deploying a “conducted energy weapon”.
The other vehicle hit by the Hyundai sustained minor damages and no injuries were reported.
“Once medically cleared, the driver was transported to the border and released to U.S. law enforcement,” stated Surrey RCMP.
