Police seeking information after woman drowns in Fraser River

Richmond RCMP are seeking dash cam footage and any possible witnesses after a woman drowned in the Fraser River over two weeks ago.

Police received a report of a woman in distress in the Fraser River yelling for help on October 3rd. With the assistance of the Canadian Coast Guard, police located the woman, who was unconscious in the river near the No .2 Road bridge.

The woman was not accessible from shore, but with help from a civilian boat operator, an officer was able to get to her and pull her from the river. The officer immediately began CPR while she was transported back to shore.

Despite lifesaving measures, the woman died in hospital.

“Tragically despite all of the valiant efforts of all those involved, the woman did not survive,” said Cpl. Adriana O’Malley in a release. “While the death does not appear to be suspicious, we are attempting to retrace the movements of the deceased prior to her being located in the Fraser River.”

Investigators have obtained footage of the woman walking northbound on No. 2 Road in the direction of the No. 2 Road Bridge.

Anyone who was driving north or southbound on the bridge, or on River Road and No. 2 Road between 4:45pm and 5:10pm are being asked to review their dash cam footage.

Any businesses located in the area of No. 2 Road and Westminster Highway, or Russ Baker Way and the No. 2 Road bridge, who have not spoken with police are asked to contact Richmond RCMP.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 2024-31464.
